Pens, books, bags ready. But what about relationships? As the new academic year approaches, it’s normal to feel anxiety about your relationships: with friends, teachers, or romantic partners in school or college.
Here are some tips on how to navigate those relationships in a healthy way.
Communicate: Whether it’s with friends, teachers, or new classmates, be open, honest and approachable, and respectful about how and when you get in touch.
Be YOU: Be true to who you are, be independent and explore hobbies and interests that make you happy.
Have boundaries: We know we should but it’s not always easy! In all your relationships it’s important to know your limits – whether it’s managing your time or addressing uncomfortable situations.
Own your actions: Take responsibility and try to deal with any conflict in a mature and healthy way.
Embrace new things: The new academic year is a chance to meet new people and form new friendships. Keep an open mind – you never know what you might find out about yourself and the people around you.
Seek help: If you’re struggling with a relationship, whether it’s with a friend or a teacher, don’t hesitate to seek support.
At LMK we run workshops in schools and youth organisations about healthy and unhealthy relationships. If you’d like to enquire about an LMK workshop, please find out more on our website.
