Why LMK exists

#letmeknow

Good relationships shape our health and happiness, but we are taught so little about them. LMK was established in 2020 to help change that.

Through workshops and training programmes, LMK educates young people about healthy and unhealthy relationship behaviours, preventing them from becoming victims or perpetrators of abuse.

Domestic Violence and Relationship Abuse affect the lives of 2.3 million people in the UK each year, and have far-reaching consequences for the individual and society.

The information below is why LMK exists

RELATIONSHIP ABUSE IS WIDESPREAD

1 IN 3 WOMEN & 1 IN 5 MEN

will experience relationship abuse in their lifetime [1]
AND IT STARTS YOUNG

18-24 YR OLD WOMEN

are three times more likely to experience relationship abuse [2]

1 IN 4 TEENAGE GIRLS & 1 IN 5 TEENAGE BOYS

experience physical partner violence [3]

75% OF TEENAGE GIRLS & 50% OF TEENAGE BOYS

experience emotional partner violence [4]

25% OF 16-19 YR OLD GIRLS

have experienced physical violence from a dating partner [5]

80% OF TRANS PEOPLE

have experienced emotional, sexual, or physical abuse from a partner or ex-partner [6a]

BISEXUAL WOMEN

are almost twice as likely to be abused as straight women [6b]

APPROX. 1 IN 4 PEOPLE IN SAME SEX RELATIONSHIPS

are just as likely to experience domestic abuse as women in heterosexual relationships are [7]

THERE IS A HUGE NEED FOR EDUCATION IN THIS AREA

40% OF 16-17 YR OLD GIRLS

have not received any information on sexual consent [8]

ONLY 1 IN 5 16-17 YR OLDS

can tell if a relationship is abusive [9]

58% OF YOUNG PEOPLE

don’t know how to help a friend at risk of abuse [10]

YOUNG PEOPLE WANT TO EXPLORE THESE ISSUES

100% OF TEENS

want to have discussions about these topics at school [11]

87% OF TEENS

said they want to learn more about healthy and unhealthy relationships [12]

Relationship health should be an essential part of every child’s education.

By giving young people the language and the tools to identify healthy and unhealthy behaviours, we can teach them how to look after themselves and others.

Take a look at how we are trying to change these figures.
